Fiona Griffiths enjoys a flavoursome lunch, with majestic views
5 October 2018
There are many good reasons to visit Buckfast Abbey: the tranquil location in a wooded valley beside the River Dart, the splendour of the Abbey itself, the pretty, peaceful gardens and – with superb views across all of this – The Grange Restaurant.
The large elevated terrace is the prime spot to sit and enjoy a meal on a fine day, but if the weather isn’t in favour there’s plenty of space inside, with floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of those views.
The Grange is open from 10am for freshly baked pastries and cooked breakfasts, through to light lunches (sandwiches, pasties, homemade soups) and not so light lunches, with afternoon teas a big draw later in the day.
We visited for lunch and rather than choosing a meal served from the counter (such as lamb hotpot or cottage pie), we decided to have something cooked to order: the signature burger for my husband and the Thai green curry for me.
There’s a choice of burgers including a homemade beef burger, a butterfly chicken breast, or a vegetable burger, all with cheese and salad (and bacon in the case of the meaty ones), served in a brioche bun with chips, onion rings, coleslaw and barbecue sauce.
Richard opted for the beef version and it had tremendous flavour, while the onion rings were crisp, and the chips well cooked. My Thai green chicken curry was delicately spiced and came on a platter with separate servings of rice, desiccated coconut, finely diced cucumber and tomato, and prawn crackers.
For pudding, I was torn between the orange cheesecake and the hot apple and blackberry pie with clotted cream or custard, but the latter won out. In fact, we both went for the pie and found it satisfyingly filled with fruit.
Fiona loves: the fantastic views of the Abbey and gardens from the large raised terrace
