This former mill, hidden in the Avon Valley, has a thriving café at its heart, alongside a garden centre, gallery and boutique shop.
Avon Mill is on the banks of the River Avon in the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's off the beaten track, so well worth seeking out.
Originally a corn mill, and later a market garden, it has developed into a well-loved, independent garden centre, boutique and an arts & crafts gallery, with a thriving café at its heart. The café is housed in the old mill building – a hub of good company, wonderful coffee, homemade cakes, lunches and award-winning Devon cream teas.
The Mill has a choice of seating areas, and the wonderful beams, floorboards and metal pillars add to the ambience of the main café. You can also choose to eat alfresco in both sunny or shady spots on the balcony or terrace, while the modern garden room overlooks the profusion of flowers in the garden centre.
The Mill’s cooking style is spontaneous, simple and seasonal. A current favourite dish is pea, ricotta and courgette frittata with pesto and mixed leaves. The chefs cook all meals in-house, including some eclectic (but delicious) cakes.
Avon Mill is well-loved for its breakfasts, which include a paleo diet version, favoured for refuelling by members of the on-site CrossFit gym after morning training. All the bacon and sausages come from Aune Valley Meat, located just up the road.
The award-winning Devon cream teas are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. They also serve huge cheese scones as part of their savoury and chilli cream teas (with chilli jam from South Devon Chilli Farm in Loddiswell) and as an accompaniment to homemade soup, which varies daily.
It’s an ideal place to bring your dog – they are welcome in the main café with water bowls, hitching posts and treats supplied. There’s a great field by the river to play catch in, with access to a walk along the old Primrose Railway Line that used to run between South Brent and Kingsbridge.
The café stocks a beautiful range of foodie treats sourced locally and beyond, from Devon honeycomb, to fig and walnut Torte Floriana. It is also licensed and serves Heron Valley Cider, made in the Avon Valley.
Avon Mill’s friendly service, seasonal menu and beautiful location make it a great day out, ideal for all the family.
